Most fabric suppliers describe ballistic performance in adjectives. Here is the relationship between layer count, areal density and protection level for our soft armor UD fabric. Test reports are available for some of these configurations. Tell us which one you are working to and we will say what we can send.

- • These figures describe fabric tested to the standards shown. NIJ certification applies to finished torso-worn body armor, not to fabric, so we never describe our fabric as NIJ certified.
- • 13 layers at 3.0 kg/m2, measured V50 480.17 m/s against 9mm FMJ 124 grain, measured by the China Ordnance Equipment Test Center in October 2021. V50 is the velocity at which half the shots are stopped, so it is a comparison figure rather than a protection level.
SB160 against .44 Magnum
Same protection level, fewer layers
The layer count needed for NIJ 0101.06 Level IIIA against .44 Magnum has come down as the fiber and the resin system improved. Fewer layers means a thinner and lighter panel at the same protection level.
Four product lines
UD fabric for soft armor, woven fabric for pressing
Soft Armor UD Fabric
Cross-plied unidirectional fabric for soft vest panels. Published layer counts for NIJ 0101.04 and 0101.06 Level IIIA. Rolls 1.6 m wide, 100 m and up.
Aramid UD Fabric
Around 200 to 220 g/m2. Ballistic only, ballistic plus anti-stab, or anti-stab only. Areal density figures for NIJ 0101.06 Level IIIA and NIJ 0115.00 stab levels 1 to 3.
Woven UHMWPE Fabric
Plain weave, 200D to 3000D, 100 to 410 g/m2, 0.21 to 0.88 mm. Uncoated as standard. Used for helmet shells and cut resistant clothing.
Woven Aramid Fabric
50 to 450 g/m2, 200D to 3000D, 0.08 to 0.7 mm. Plain weave, twill available from PA140 upward. Used for helmet shells, soft armor, hard plates and vehicle panels.
